What Credit Cards Does Costco Not Accept? A Complete Guide for Shoppers
If you've ever reached the checkout at Costco only to realize your credit card isn't accepted, you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions shoppers ask before visiting the warehouse or placing an online order.
The short answer is simple: Costco does not accept every credit card network. Depending on where you're shopping and whether you're shopping in-store or online, certain cards will work while others won't.
This guide explains exactly which credit cards Costco does not accept, why those restrictions exist, what payment methods you can use instead, and practical tips to avoid payment problems. Whether you're a first-time member or a long-time shopper, understanding Costco's payment policy can save time and frustration.
What Credit Cards Does Costco Not Accept?
The biggest limitation is that Costco only accepts selected credit card networks for warehouse purchases.
Generally, Costco does not accept:
- Mastercard credit cards (for in-warehouse purchases in many locations)
- American Express credit cards
- Discover credit cards
- Diners Club credit cards
- JCB credit cards (where unsupported)
This means that if you arrive with only one of these cards, you may not be able to complete your purchase at the register.
However, payment acceptance can differ depending on:
- Your shopping region
- Whether you're shopping online or in a warehouse
- Local payment partnerships
Because payment agreements occasionally change, it's always worth checking Costco's current payment information before making a large purchase.
Why Doesn't Costco Accept Every Credit Card?
Many retailers accept nearly every major credit card. Costco takes a different approach.
The company negotiates exclusive agreements with payment networks. These partnerships help Costco lower processing costs, allowing the warehouse to maintain competitive pricing on merchandise.
Since Costco operates on relatively small profit margins and relies heavily on membership revenue, reducing transaction fees helps keep overall operating costs lower.
Although this system benefits Costco's pricing model, it can surprise shoppers who expect universal credit card acceptance.
Credit Cards Costco Does Not Accept In Warehouse
For warehouse shopping, these cards are commonly not accepted:
Mastercard Credit Cards
Many shoppers assume Mastercard is accepted everywhere.
At Costco warehouses, that's not always true.
Examples include:
- World Mastercard
- World Elite Mastercard
- Business Mastercard
- Airline Mastercard rewards cards
- Cashback Mastercard cards
If your only payment method is a Mastercard credit card, you may need another payment option before checking out.
American Express
American Express was once Costco's exclusive credit card partner years ago.
That partnership ended, and today American Express credit cards are generally not accepted for warehouse purchases.
Examples include:
- Platinum Card
- Gold Card
- Green Card
- Blue Cash Preferred
- Blue Cash Everyday
- Hilton rewards cards
- Marriott rewards cards
- Delta SkyMiles cards
Many longtime Costco members still carry an American Express card expecting it to work, only to discover the policy changed.
Discover Credit Cards
Discover cards are also generally not accepted for warehouse checkout.
Examples include:
- Discover it Cash Back
- Discover it Miles
- Discover Student cards
- Discover Business cards
If Discover is your primary credit card, you'll usually need an alternative payment method.
Diners Club
Although less common today, Diners Club cards are also typically not accepted.
This includes:
- Diners Club International
- Diners Club Corporate cards
JCB Cards
JCB cards may not be accepted depending on the warehouse location and payment processing agreements.
Travelers who rely on JCB should verify payment acceptance before shopping.
Which Credit Cards Does Costco Accept?
While Costco limits accepted credit card networks, shoppers still have several reliable payment options.
Commonly accepted methods include:
- Visa credit cards
- Costco co-branded Visa cards
- Visa business credit cards
- Visa rewards cards
- Visa cashback cards
Many shoppers choose a Costco-branded Visa because it offers rewards that pair well with frequent warehouse purchases.
Does Costco Accept Debit Cards?
Yes Costco accepts most debit cards that use major payment networks.
These include:
- Visa Debit
- Mastercard Debit (in many locations)
- PIN-based debit cards
- Bank debit cards
Unlike credit card acceptance, debit card policies are often broader.
Does Costco Accept Mobile Wallets?
Yes. Many warehouses support contactless payments such as:
- Apple Pay
- Google Pay
- Samsung Wallet
However, remember that the mobile wallet still relies on the underlying card.
For example:
If your Apple Pay contains an unsupported credit card, the payment may still be declined.
Does Costco Accept Cash?
Yes Cash remains one of the easiest payment methods.
Many shoppers still prefer cash because it avoids any credit card compatibility issues.
Does Costco Accept Checks?
Some warehouse locations continue accepting:
- Personal checks
- Business checks
- Certified checks
Requirements may vary, so it's best to confirm with your local warehouse before relying on a check for payment.
Can You Use Mastercard on Costco.com?
This is where many shoppers become confused.
Online payment policies can differ from warehouse payment policies.
Costco's website has historically accepted additional card networks beyond what warehouses accept.
Because online payment policies occasionally change, always verify accepted payment methods during checkout.
Why Your Credit Card May Still Be Declined
Even if you have a supported card, your payment could still fail.
Common reasons include:
Expired Card
An expired card cannot be authorized.
Always check the expiration date before shopping.
Fraud Protection
Banks sometimes block unusual transactions.
Large Costco purchases may trigger temporary fraud alerts.
Calling your bank usually resolves the issue quickly.
Spending Limit
Large purchases can exceed:
- Credit limit
- Daily purchase limit
- Available balance
Checking your available credit beforehand can prevent delays.
Incorrect Billing Information
For online purchases, entering an incorrect billing ZIP code or address may cause authorization to fail.
Temporary Network Issues
Occasionally, payment processors experience brief outages.
Waiting a few minutes or trying another payment method often solves the problem.
What Payment Methods Can You Use Instead?
If your preferred credit card isn't accepted, consider:
- Visa credit card
- Debit card
- Cash
- Costco Shop Card
- Mobile wallet linked to a supported card
- Personal check (where accepted)
Having at least two payment options is always a smart idea.
Can Someone Else Pay for Your Purchase?
Yes, in many situations another person can pay using an accepted payment method while you're shopping.
However, warehouse membership rules still apply.
The purchaser generally needs to comply with Costco's membership policies.
Are Costco Shop Cards a Good Backup?
Absolutely.
A Costco Shop Card works almost like a gift card.
Many experienced shoppers keep one in their wallet for emergencies when a preferred credit card isn't accepted.
From personal experience, carrying a backup payment option removes the stress of discovering a payment issue at the register. Even if you rarely use it, having a Shop Card or Visa card available can make checkout much smoother, especially during large shopping trips.
Avoid Payment Problems at Costco
After years of warehouse shopping, a few habits consistently help avoid checkout surprises.
Bring More Than One Payment Method
Never rely on a single credit card.
Having a backup debit card or Visa credit card provides peace of mind.
Check Before Large Purchases
Planning to buy furniture, electronics, appliances, or jewelry?
Verify your available credit beforehand.
Update Expired Cards
Many declined transactions happen simply because an old card is still in your wallet.
Keep a Debit Card Available
A debit card often serves as the quickest backup when a credit card isn't accepted.
Confirm Online Payment Options
Before placing a large online order, review the available payment methods during checkout.
Policies occasionally change.
Final Thoughts
Knowing what credit cards Costco does not accept can prevent an unexpected delay at checkout. While many retailers welcome nearly every credit card network, Costco follows a more selective payment policy that reflects its low-cost operating model.
Before your next shopping trip, take a moment to check the payment methods in your wallet. If your primary card is one that Costco typically doesn't accept—such as American Express, Discover, or certain Mastercard credit cards—it’s wise to bring an alternative like a Visa card, debit card, cash, or a Costco Shop Card.
In my own experience, keeping a backup payment option has saved time more than once, especially during larger shopping trips. A quick check before you leave home can make the checkout process faster, smoother, and completely stress-free.
